Scotland County Hospital (SCH) is a non-for-profit district hospital in operation since 1970, designated as a Critical Access Hospital in Memphis, Missouri. Since 1997 SCH has established three (3) hospital-based rural health clinics in Scotland, Clark and Schuyler Counties in order to stabilize healthcare delivery providers. SCH has continually demonstrated a deep commitment to this rural remote geographic area we serve, in which we are the only hospital in a five (5) county area of extreme Northeast Missouri.
Scotland County Hospital’s mission is “to improve the healthcare of our communities with services close to home”. At SCH, we take this mission statement to the next level, to not only care for the community when they walk in the door, but to reach out into the communities we serve.
SCH has many more services than the average Critical Access Hospital. We have a new state-of-the art Surgery Center that is staffed by surgeons 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Our surgeons offer general surgeries and we have specialists that offer surgery for orthopaedics, obstetrics & gynecology. The hospital has a beautiful women’s center that meets the needs of our Obstetrics & Gynecology patients with 3 physicians that delivery babies at SCH. And, our Emergency Department is staffed with an ER physicians & mid-level providers 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Through partnering with surrounding area resources, SCH is able to offer Orthopaedics, Cardiology services, Oncology services, and Rheumatology services.
In order to build a healthier community, we rely on many partners to help offer services that would not otherwise be available in this rural community. SCH partners with all of the local resources, many colleges that offer medical training (nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy, respiratory therapy, and medical resident programs to name a few), and medical facilities to help bring resources back to community. We partner with colleges to allow their students to come to SCH to do rotations, clinicals and a variety of other training.
Leadership– Scotland County Hospital’s Board of Directors, Administration, Medical Staff and employees are committed to improving the health of the community. Due to our rural location, many resources are not available. The staff at SCH does not believe that just because we are located in a rural area, that we should not be able to provide all of the essential basic medical services that are available in urban areas.
Commitment– Scotland County Hospital’s Board of Directors is responsible for the hospital’s primary functions. The Board of Directors and Medical Staff of SCH is composed of people who live in the community. They understand the challenges that exist in our community and are dedicated to help overcome these challenges. We believe we have a unique relationship between the Administration, Board of Directors and Medical Staff at SCH. They are committed to working hand in hand to obtain our goals and objectives of improving the healthcare of the communities we serve. It is very important that these two groups work as a team and have a common goal.
Another key component is the team whom staff Scotland County Hospital. SCH has many long-term, “home-grown”, employees who are dedicated to the needs of our communities and are committed to creating a better quality of life for everyone in this remote, rural area. It is never an issue to have enough volunteers to operate the various free screenings that are offered to the community.
Sustainability-Scotland County Hospital’s community service initiatives are included in the hospital’s budgeting process each year. Every year the programs are reviewed and evaluated by the Board of Directors. SCH is always looking for ways to expand these community services in a new and innovative way while being cost-effective. The benefits to the community and being able to offer these programs outweighs the expense of conducting these programs, therefore Scotland County Hospital is committed to continuing the existing services.
